ABSTRACT

Mosquito-borne diseases or illnesses are diseases caused by bacterial, viruses or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. They transmit disease without being affected themselves. Nearly one million die in every year of world population and seven hundred million people get various diseases due to mosquitoes. So to control the mortality rate, the vector mosquito can be destroyed at its breeding stage itself. The present study aims at evaluating the larvicidal properties of aqueous extract of leaves of Mimosa pudica Linn and Dioscorea alata Linn for its larvicidal property. The aqueous extract of leaves of Mimosa pudica L and Dioscorea alata L were evaluated against the third and fourth instars larvae (Aedes aegypti). Maceration technique was used to prepare the extract using water as solvent. Larvicidal activity was screened at 5 different concentrations and its potential was determined at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 and 24 hours and the percentage mortality were calculated. It was noted that none of the aqueous extract was found to possess larvicidal properties.

Keywords: Mimosa pudica, Dioscorea alata, Aedes aegypti, instar and larvicidal.
