ABSTRACT

Oral route is the most common route for administration of drugs because it is regarded as safest, most convenient and economical route. These years, researchers had successfully developed the fast dissolving tablet (FDT) or orodispersible tablets (ODT) with improved patient compliance and convenience. Fast dissolving tablets are solid dosage forms containing drugs that disintegrate in the oral cavity within less than one minute leaving an easy-to-swallow residue. FDTs overcome the disadvantages of conventional dosage form especially in paediatric and geriatric patients. Such formulations provide an opportunity for product line extension in the many elderly persons have difficulties in taking conventional oral dosage forms (viz., solutions, suspensions, tablets, and capsules) because of hand tremors and dysphagia. In the recent trend the development of mouth dissolving tablets formulation is emerging and gaining popularity due to easy to administer and can be taken without water. These dosage forms have the unique property of rapidly disintegrating and/or dissolving and releasing the drug as soon as they come in contact with saliva, thus obviating the need for water during administration. There are multiple of FDTs and prescription products worldwide, most of which have been launched in the past 4 to 5 years. It is expected that this delivery system will get much importance as that of conventional delivery systems in near future. The aim of this article is to focus on the various technologies developed for FDT, patented technologies and evaluation methods.
