CRITICAL REVIEW ON ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF HARIDRA (TURMERIC)

ABSTRACT
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) can be correlated as Madhumeha in Ayurveda. There is wide number of herbal drugs are mentioned in Ayurvedic texts in the treatment of Madhumeha (DM). Among many herbs known for their anti-diabetic properties, Haridra (Turmeric – Curcuma longa Linn.) stands the leader. Aim and Objectives: To summarize the anti-diabetic activity of HARIDRA-Curcuma longa Linn (Turmeric). Methodology: In this paper the ancient as well as contemporary scientific literatures related role of Curcuma longa Linn. in DM is compiled. Particular attention is given to comprehend the anti-diabetic property of curcuma longa and
Ayurvedic properties of Haridra all the information collected from Ayurvedic scriptures, classical texts of Ayurveda and contemporary textbooks, electronic journals, E-library & other research materials. Results: Haridra(Curcuma Longa) having Katu-Tikta Ras; Ruksh Guna; Ushna Virya; Katu Vipak, can be used as effective anti-diabetic in different forms, with combination of other drugs and with diet. Conclusion: After review it is observed that Haridra is one of the best drug of choice to manage effectively and to control the Diabetes mellitus.
