EVALUATION OF DRUG RELEASE FROM CARBOXYMETHYL CHITOSAN-HPMC MATRICES
Mohd. Junaid*
ABSTRACT
The objective of the present investigation was to explore the potential of the HPMC based polymeric matrices as carrier for sustained stomach specific delivery of model drug Verapamil Hydrochloride. Briefly, single unit hydrodynamically balanced (HBS) capsule formulations were prepared by encapsulating in hard gelatin capsules, intimately mixed physical mixtures of drug, HPMC K4M and Carboxymethyl Chitosan. In vitro buoyancy studies in 0.1M HCL revealed good floating (5-10 hr) characteristics. Drug release studies carried out using 0.1M HCL (pH adjusted to 1.2) as dissolution medium, revealed sustaine release from the prepared formulations for
up to 10 hr. From the data obtained, it was concluded that these polymeric matrices may constitute carrier for the stomach specific drug delivery.
