Abstract

A REVIEW: TASTE MASKING OF BITTER PHARMACEUTICAL AGENTS BY USING ION EXCHANGE RESINS

ABSTRACT

Taste masking of bitter drugs is now days top most priority of pharmaceutical companies in order to improve the poor taste and palatability. Various techniques based on different principles have been investigated and described in academic and patent literature for masking of bitter taste of drugs like addition of sweeteners, flavouring agents and amino acids, inclusion complexation with cyclodextrin, salt preparation, pro-drug approach, microencapsulation. Ion exchange resins have received attention from pharmaceutical Scientists because of simple, efficient and their versatile properties as drug delivery vehicles. Research over last few years has revealed that IER are equally suitable for drug delivery technologies including controlled release, transdermal, nasal, topical, and taste masking. Ion exchange resins are insoluble polymers that contain acidic or basic functional groups with an ability to exchange counter ions within aqueous solution surrounding them. In present article also briefly discuss the ion exchange resins employed for taste masking of drugs.
