RAPID BIOSYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES USING LEAF EXTRACT OF BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. GONGYLODES AND THEIR ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY AGAINST BACTERIA
Subhankar Das, Mohan Chandra Kalita and Susmita Shukla*
ABSTRACT In this present study silver nanoparticles have been synthesized usingaqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G. under the influence ofdirect sunlight. The stable silver nanoparticles have been synthesizedusing 90 ml of 10-3 M silver nitrate and was mixed with 10 ml ofaqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G., the reaction mixturewas exposed to direct sunlight. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticleswere characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffractionanalysis (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).The UV-Vis showed a broad peak at 435 nm. Furthermore, the XRDanalysis revealed the crystalline nature of the synthesized silvernanoparticles. Also, the biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were testedagainst Staphylococcus auerus (MTCC 97) and Escherichia coli(MTCC 111) to evaluate their antibacterial activity using disc diffusionmethod. The synthesized silver nanoparticles showed promising antibacterial activity againstboth the bacterial strains. The present study shows the synthesis of stable silver nanoparticlesusing aqueous leaf extract of Brassica oleracea Var G. in an eco-friendly and cost effectiveway. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles could be utilize in the field of nanomedicine andin various other applications. Keywords: Brassica oleracea Var G., Staphylococcus auerus, Escherichia coli.
