ABSTRACT
The free radical scavenging activity evaluation of methanol aerial parts (leaf and stem) extract of Mentha arvensis L from Kashmiri Himalaya region was evaluated by using nitrous oxide, hydrogen peroxide and metal chelating scavenging assays. It was found that the percentage inhibition of nitrous oxide scavenging was increased with concentration of extract and was 87.61% at concentration of 500μg/ml. The percentage inhibition of H2O2 scavenging was found to be concentration dependent and was 62.14% at concentration of 1000μg/ml. The percentage inhibition of metal chelating activity was also found concentration dependent and was 87.1% at concentration of 500μg/ml. The results indicate that methanol extract from aerial parts of Mentha arvensis L from Kashmiri Himalaya has good free radical scavenging ability and can be regarded as promising candidates for natural plant sources of antioxidants with high activity.
