ABSTRACT

The aim of the present work is to develop bilayered sustained release floating tablets of Amlodipine 5mg and Atorvastatin 10mg. The sustained release layer of tablets was prepared by using HPMC K100M, HPMC K15M, Ethyl cellulose and Carbopol 934p as polymers and sodium bicarbonate as effervescent agent. The immediate release layer was prepared by using sodium starch glycolate and Croscarmellose sodium as super disintegrants. The physico chemical compatibility of the drug and the excipients in the formulation was studied by FTIR studies. The results obtained showed no interaction between the drug and excipients for development of bilayer tablets. In-vitro release studies were evaluated in 0.1N HCl for 24hrs using type-2 dissolution apparatus. The formulation I 4 with immediate release layer produces drug release within 1hour and formulation F 6 with sustained release floating layer produces drug release within 24hours. The study concluded that bilayer floating tablets of Amlodipine and Atorvastatin can be an alternative to conventional dosage form.

Keywords: Bilayer floating tablets, Atorvastatin, Amlodipine, HPMC, Super disintegrants.
