Abstract

ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS INORGANIC SALTS IN MARKETED EYE DROPS

Ekta Atodaria and Rajashree Mashru*

ABSTRACT

Present study deals with the standardization of inorganic salts present in the eye drops. Eye drops are sterile liquid, semi-solid or solid preparations intended for administration upon the eyeball and/or to the conjunctiva, or for insertion in the conjunctival sac. It is necessary to know the quality requirements for the eye drops as it is required and important to guarantee the quality product and their supply in different markets of the world. The main aim of the study is to estimate inorganic ions like Boron, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Zinc and Sulphate present in the form of salts like Borax, Boric acid, Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride, Zinc sulphate in eye drops. Very few studies have been conducted on such salts present in water, plasma, saline etc., but there is no study carried out for such salts present in eye drops. Though the topic is on the rise, documentation of research on such salts very rare. Due to the nature of this topic, further research on this issue are pertinent. In order to quantify such salts in eye drops, spectroscopic measurements by colorimetry is carried out.

Keywords: Borax, Boric acid, Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride, Zinc sulphate, colorimetry, eye drops.
