*Priya M , Dr.Senthamil Selvi C.S and Kousalya M.

ABSTRACT

Colour is an integral part of both human culture and in human life. Most of the synthetic colorants are harmful to the environment and are difficult to biodegrade. There is an increasing interest involving microorganisms as an alternate source of synthetic colorants. Most of the synthetic colorants are harmful to the environment and are difficult biodegrade. There is an increasing interest involving microorganisms as an alternate source of synthetic colorants. In this the present study was carried out to reduce the effects of non biodegradable pollutants. In the current study pigmented bacterial isolates obtained from the soil, were used for pigment extraction and study. The maximum pigment production observed at pH 8, temperature at 370C, carbon source at 2.5%, nitrogen source at 1.5%. The extract was prepared using methanol as solvent and the absorption maximum of sample was determined using Spectrophotometer. The pigment was further analyzed using thin layer chromatography and antibacterial activity of pigment. The extracted pigment was applied for the textile dyeing and candle colour.

Keywords: Bacterial pigment, Methanol extraction, Spectrophotometer, dyeing.
