TajdarHusain Khan*, MajidAhmed Ganaie, NasirAli Siddiqui, Aftab Alam, MohdNazam Ansari
ABSTRACT Objective: Reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anions, are produced as by products in aerobic organisms, and have been implicated in the pathology of a vast variety of human diseases. Antioxidant activity is an important in-view of the free radical theory of many diseases. Methods: In the present study, acetone, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and methanol extracts of Achyranthes asperaL. were evaluated for radical scavenging activity by studying the inhibition of the level of lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(++)/ascorbate, DNA sugar damage, scavenging of hydrogen peroxide, DPPH radical scavenging activity, total phenolic content, total flavonoids content and total proanthocyanidin. Results: The maximum free radical scavenging potential was found with the methanol extraction of A. aspera. Conclusion: The results suggest that the extracts can be a vital source of phytochemical antioxidants. Keywords: Achyranthes asperaL.;DNA sugar damage; DPPH; antioxidant.
