Abstract

EVALUATION OF IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF HYDROALCOHOLIC AND AQUEOUS SEEDS EXTRACTS OF TAMARINDUS INDICA L.

Bibekananda Meher, Dr. Deepak Kumar Dash*, Bibhuti Bhusan Bhoi

ABSTRACT

Tamarindus indica L.(Caesalpiniaceae) is used traditionally for the treatment of various disorders, including ,wound, fever, malaria, abdominal pain, leprosy, conjunctivitis, stomachic, preservative, anthelmintic, bacterial infection, diabetes, oxidative stress, asthma, diabetes, oxidative stress. Hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts of Tamarinds were tested for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. In-vitro antioxidant assay was performed by DPPH (1, 1 –diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay, Hydroxyl radicals scavenging assay, Ferric reducing assay, and Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay. In antioxidant assay methods percentage of free radical scavenging activity was calculated and IC50 values were also determined for each of the extracts. Hydroalcoholic extracts showed greater antioxidant activity and the results for DPPH·, OH·, NO· radical scavenging methods are 77.66±1.85, 79.0±0.57, 88.0±0.57 respectively and ferric reducing antioxidant power was also determined at 500μg/ml concentration and it was 1.4 ±0.05. Antimicrobial activity was performed against 4 stains of human pathogenic bacteria by broth micro dilution and agar diffusion method. In disc diffusion, both of the extracts shown good antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria. Maximum inhibition zone diameters were resulted on hydro alcoholic extracts of seeds (20.66±1.15) against S. aureus and aqueous extracts of seeds (20.33±4.5) against B. subtilis. Maximum inhibition zone diameters of aqueous extracts of seeds and hydroalcoholic extracts of seeds against gram negative bacteria E. coli and P. aeruginosa were 17.33±1.52 and 20.66±1.15. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration shown by different extracts were in the range of 10-18mg/ml.

Keywords: Tamarindus indica, Nitric oxide, Disc diffusion, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli.
