Abstract

ABSTRACT

Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) involves microbial invasion of the skin and the underlying soft tissues. Approximately 7% to 10% of hospitalized patients are affected by SSTIs, and they are very common in the emergency care settings. Antibiotic drug resistance in bacterial pathogens further complicates the treatment of SSTIs. The present study was conducted to find the anti-bacterial activity of crude ethanolic leaf extracts of Psidium guajava L. against the aerobic bacterial pathogens of the skin and soft tissue wound infection. The clinical isolates used in the study include Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Proteus mirabilis, E.coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. The antibacterial activity of guava extract was studied by agar well diffusion method at five concentrations viz. 50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 150mg/ml, 200mg/ml and 250 mg/ml. Maximum inhibition was observed at a concentration of 250mg/ml of the crude ethanol leaf extract of Psidium guajava L. The study suggests that ethanolic leaf extracts of Psidium guajava L. can be used as a potential candidate to treat bacterial wound infections.

Keywords: SSTIs, Psidium guajava, antibacterial, inhibition.
