Abstract

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF ATISTHOULAYA (OBESITY)- A BURNING PROBLEM IN WOMEN

ABSTRACT

A healthy body is the only media to achieve the ultimate goal among the chaturvidha purushartha(ch-sut-21/18-19). Susruta said that madhayam sharira is best but Atisthula and ati-krisha always affected with some health related complains.As per charka there are eight varieties of impedements whicj are designated as Nindita purusha amongst which atisthaulaya comprise one of them. Hence atistaukaya (obesity). Methods: Study was conducted by using data from OPD of SDM hospital recorded year of 2015, the patients which are already diagnosed as obese on the basis of BMI recorded as per WHO guidelines. Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the prevalence rate of obesity in women and associated problems. Result: In gender wise distribution Majority of patients 495 (61.5%) of obesity were females out of 804 and rest 38.5% are males. In age wise distribution It was noted that maximum 52.9%patients of obesity were from age group of 11-30 years and 34.5% patients were belonging to age group of 31-50 years and minimum of 12.5 % were belonging to 51-70 years age group. Conclusion: Age: In this study, 52.9% of patients were belonged to the age group of 11-30 years. The different surveys also say about the increased cases in this age group. In modern texts, obesity is more prevalent in adolescent. The reason may be increased consumption of junk foods and lack of physical activities. Gender: This study shows 61.5% of the subjects were females. This indicates the incidence of sthoulya is more in female. Obesity is becoming more prevalent and has wide ranging effects on a variety of women’s health issues. Clinicians should counsel all women about the broad negative effects of obesity and the importance of controlling weight to prevent negative out comes.
