Abstract

THE EFFICACY OF AROGYAVARDHINI VATI IN ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER - A CLINICAL STUDY

*Dr. Manish Patil and Prof. Dr. Ruta Kadam

ABSTRACT

Alcohol addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by compulsion to take alcohol and loss of self control. On absorption through the gastro-intestinal tract it further reaches the liver, impairs gluco-neogenesis thus resulting in the fall of glucose production. Hence repeated consumption of alcohol leads to severe changes in liver functioning thereby causing fatty accumulation, alcohol induced hepatitis, perivenular sclerosis etc. The common signs and symptoms of Alcoholic Fatty Liver are loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, etc1.1. Fatty liver is a universal condition observed in heavy drinkers such that 40% of those who consume <10 gm per day exhibit such fatty changes1.2. It is largely caused by reduced fatty acid oxidation due to decrease activity of citric acid cycle as well as the release of free oxygen radicals. The hepatocytes hence accumulate large quantity of triglycerides resulting in micro and macro vesicular fatty changes. Contemporary medicine offers no specific drugs to treat alcoholic fatty liver. In clinical practice, LIV 52, Tab UDILIV etc are used along with abstinence from alcohol. The Ayurveda concept of the contemporary pathophysiology of fat accumulation can be correlated to Dhatu dushtis. The treatment to be administered thus calls for a drug that is Deepana, Pachana, Lekhana and Medovinashaka. Arogyavardhini vati, a herbo-mineral preparation to fulfill allthese requirement. Besides, the drug is already a proven hepatoprotective and anti-obesity formulation. However, no study has been conducted to assess its efficacy in alcoholic fatty liver, hence was chosen as the Trial drug.
