ABSTRACT

Corchorus depressus Linn. (Tiliaceae) has been used in the Indigenous system of medicine as a tonic, cooling medicine in fevers; its mucilage is prescribed in gonorrhoea. Root is rubbed on stone and smeared over forehead to get relief in migraine. The ethno pharmacological study of the plant reveals its antimalarial, diuretic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Methanolic whole plants extract of Corchorus depressus Linn. was studied for its in-vivo analgesic and antipyretic potential. The Hot-plate method results showed significant increase in reaction time 60 minutes after administration of test and standard drug without behavioural effects. In Acetic acid induced writhing test, the plant extract at 150mg/kg and 300mg/kg produced 81.25% and 85.42% writhing response inhibition respectively and for Pentazocin, the inhibition was 87.5%. The test showed significant degree of anti- pyretic activity at the two doses and the reduction of hyperthermia was pronounced 60 min after administration and was prolonged for 4 hours by Brewer’s Yeast method. The extract also showed potent in vitro inhibition of FeCl2-ascorbic acid stimulated rat liver-peroxidation at 50, 100, & 150 μg/ml as compared to FeCl2-AA control. The Phytochemical studies showed the presence of alkaloids, Flavonoids, carbohydrates and glycosides. The HPLC analysis chromatograms shows peaks with a retention time 6.451 min. Sub chronic toxicity revealed no significant difference in haemoglobin, Organ weights and Urine analysis data after 28 days. The above study justifies folklore use of the plant by the tribal people of Odisha for its analgesic and antipyretic action.

Keywords: Migraine; Antimalarial; HPLC analysis; Flavonoids.
