Abstract

KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE TOWARDS BLOOD DONATION AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS IN TAIF UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

Background: Blood transfusion saves lives; the most imperative factor, which need blood, is road traffic accident on emergency department, the world health assembly (WHA 63) urges all the member states to develop national blood systems based on voluntary unpaid donors. The aim of the study: To assess the knowledge attitude and practice towards blood donation among medical student. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on the total sample of 207 male and female university volunteer students from the college of medicine in Taif University, data entry, and statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) program for windows version 16. Results: Out of 207 individuals, 87 (42%) were donors and 120 (58%) were non-donors. 67(33.3%) donation voluntary, 83(40.1%) will donate in future. Regarding the knowledge 194(93.7%) were aware of disease, which transmissible by blood transfusion. Regarding the attitude A total 166 (80.2%) of student strongly agree with the statement "I think blood donation saves a lot of life". A total 84(40.6%) strongly agree with statement "I think the voluntary donate blood the best way to donation" Conclusion: In this study, we aim to see the knowledge, attitude, and practice of blood donation we found that the medical students had exultant knowledge about blood donation, positive and negative attitude was expectable and low number of voluntary blood donation.
