ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with long term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. Diabetes has been described as an epidemic, but predications for future increases in prevalence, especially in developing countries point to a major health care crisis for the future. The goals of therapy for diabetes mellitus - eliminate symptoms related to hyperglycemia, reduce or eliminate long term microvasaular, macrovascular complications of DM, monitoring the level of glycemic control, oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin. The modern medicine provides symptomatic relief and patient have to take medicines for life time, which may be having some unwanted side effects.
