Abstract

REVIEW ON A NATURAL DRUGSTORE- NEEM

ABSTRACT

Neem is one of the most useful traditional medicinal plant in India. Neem is a large tree growing about 25 m in height with semi-straight to straight trunk, 3 m in girth and spreading branches forming a broad crown. A neem tree normally starts fruiting after 3-5 years. In about 10 years it becomes fully productive. This review gives a bird‘s eye view mainly on the biological activities of some of the neem compounds isolated, pharmacological actions of the neem extracts, clinical studies and plausible medicinal applications of neem along with their safety evaluation. Ayurveda, unani, homeopathic medicine, therefore considered as cynosure of modern medicine. This review article provides information mainly on various biological activities like Antiallergic, Antidermatic, Antibacterial, Antifungal, Anti- inflammatory, Insecticidal, larvicidal, Antimalarial, Antiulcer and other biological activities of neem plant and medicinal uses. Each part of the neem tree has some medicinal property. Neem (Azardirachta indica. A. Juss.), contains at least 35 biologically active principles of which nimbin and azadirachtin are the most active insecticidal ingredients and are present mostly in the seeds, leaves and other parts of the neem. The role of Azadirachta indica in the prevention and treatment of diseases via the regulation of various biological and physiological pathways.
