ASSESSMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR RISK IN PATIENTS WITHOUT KNOWN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IN GENERAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF BMCH AND RC

Joice Joseph*, Mable Babu, Prasanth G., K. N. Sasidhar Naidu

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is common in the general population, affecting the majority of adults. The risk is defined as the percentage chance of an individual developing a cardiovascular disease event over a given period of time. QRISK is a new cardiovascular risk prediction tool, which was shown to have greater predictive ability that extends the age range to 25 and 84 years. Objectives: To assess the cardiovascular risk for the next 10 years in patients without known cardiovascular disease using QRISK2-2015 risk score. Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted at General Medicine Department of Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Chitradurga. This study included the patients without known cardiovascular disease aged between 25-84 years. The 10 year cardiovascular risk for every patient was calculated by using the QRISK2-2015 risk score and the risk was categorized as high risk, moderate risk and low risk. Results: Out of 200 patients aged ≥25 years, 110 were males and 90 were females. The study showed that 57 males and 71 females had low risk, 20 males and 16 females had moderate risk and 33 males and 3 females had high risk. On the basis of smoking grounds, Heavy smokers and moderate smokers had high risk, non-smokers and ex-smokers had low risk and light smokers had moderate risk respectively. Conclusion: Measurement of total cardiovascular risk offers a distinct advantage to monitor impact of multi-factorial interventions overtime and to assess total preventive treatment needs.

Keywords: Cardiovascular disease, QRISK, High risk, Smoking.
