REVIEW ARTICLE ON BILAYER SUSTAINED RELEASE TABLET

ABSTRACT

Now a day’s greater attention has been focused on development of controlled and immediate release drug delivery systems. Several pharmaceutical companies are currenty developing bilayer tablets, for variety of reason: patent extension, efficient pharmacological effect, better patient compliance etc. Bilayer tablet is suitable for sequential release of two drugs in combination or to incorporate two incompatible substances in same tablet. Bilayer tablets have been consist of two layers which one is slow release and other immediate release layer. as well as improved beneficial technology to overcome the shortcoming of single layer tablets. This article provide the development and production of quality bilayer tablets, various tablet presses used, approaches of bilayer tablets, recent developments in the field of bilayer technology.
