Ansari Sajidul Hoque*, Gogoi Bithika, Nath Rimlee, Sarkar Bapi Roy, Kalita Pallab, Dey Biplob Kumar

ABSTRACT

Pharmacognostical studies were carried out on the sterile stems of Equisetum arvense Linn, which showed the presence of xylem vessels, cortex, parenchyma, stomata and silica granules. Physicochemical parameters such as water and alcohol soluble extractive values were found to be 8.6% and 5%w/w. The total ash value, acid insoluble ash and water soluble ash were found to be 30.38%, 29.32% and 26.34% w/w respectively. The loss on drying was found to be 12.5% w/w. These investigations will be helpful in correct identification and standardization of plant and to differentiate it from the closely resembled species.

Keywords: Equisetum arvense, Pharmacognostical studies, Ash value.
