ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of methanol extract of Talinum
triangulare plant on the blood and kidney of experimental albino rats
within a period of two weeks of treatment with (100, 200 and
400mg/kg body weights of the extract). Sixteen wistar albino rats
weighing between 117- 200g were randomly divided into four groups.
The control group received normal saline while the three other groups
received the extract at varied dose levels of (100, 200 and 400mg/kg
body weight). Results of serum PCV and RBC indicated a significant
increase (p<0.05) while there was no significant difference between
serum urea and creatinine when compared to the control. The
qualitative phytochemical and chemical screening revealed the
presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, reducing
sugars, saponins, proteins, carbohydrate, fats and oil, tanins, steroids, resins and terprenoids
in the methanol extract of the plant. Therefore, this study suggests that methanol extract of
Talinum triangulare leaves have phytochemical ingredients capable of improving the kidney
and blood of individuals and thus, might be useful in the management of anaemia or kidney
related disorders caused by erythropoietin suppression.
Keywords: phytochemical, erythropoietin, anaemia, Talinum triangulare, Heamatological parameters and kidney markers.
