THE VELVET BEAN (MUCUNA SPS.): IN AYURVEDIC ERA

ABSTRACT Velvet Bean, is an important „Vajikarana’ drug mentioned in Ayurveda, an integral part of Indian System of Medicine. It is used mainly for its Balya, Vrishya and Tridoshahara properties. It is the best natural source of L-DOPA, which is precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine, widely used in Parkinsonism, muscular disorders and also in spermatogenesis. This review has highlighted the importance of Kapikacchu in various Samhitas and Nighantus. The review summarized the classical names, classification, properties, uses of drug and its Yogas (formulations). The literature survey showed that in India Kapikacchu species are widely used to treat the patients of various disorders since ancient times.
