ABSTRACT

Marine organisms have been regarded as a good source of pharmaceutical compounds and also as nutritive foodstuff for human diet. The fatty acids, sterols, alkanes and amino acids profiles of marine gastropod Tibia Curta, collected from Neendakara, the southwest coast of India were analysed by GC-MS, GC-FID and HPLC. Overall 17 fatty acids, 11 amino acids, 17 alkanes, 5 sterols and 1 sterone were determined. Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were found to be dominant, of which palmitic acid is being abundant (22.65%). Poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were the second dominant fatty acids. The total n3 fatty acids were higher than the total n6 fatty acids. Cholesterol was the major sterol and trace amounts of other sterols were identified. Trace amounts of sterone, Cholest-4-en-3-one (1.11±0.01%) was recognised. Alkanes of T.Curta shows a major predominance at C12 and C13 and the minimum occurred at a higher carbon number, C26 (2.56±0.49 μg g-1). The total essential amino acids (EAA) were found to be as 62.16% and non-essential amino acids (NEAA) were 37.83%. Arginine (32.85%) was the major and Isoleusine (0.17%) was the minimum EAA. Serine (14.84%) was the chief and Tyrosine (2.87%) was the least NEAA, both EAA and NEAA concerned 99.99%.

Keywords: Fatty acids, Sterols, Alkanes, Amino acids, Gastropod, Tibia Curta.
