ABSTRACT

Background: Hypertension is one of the leading causes of preventable morbidity and disease-related disability. Knowledge, awareness and information surveys are important and effective in terms of providing baseline for evaluating intervention programs. In this article we assessed knowledge and awareness of patients towards hypertension along with what doctor advice the patients regarding drug treatment, adverse effects and important drug interactions and when to see doctors apart from routine visits. Materials and Methods: Using structured questionnaires, a descriptive study was conducted in hypertensive patients to obtain information on patient’s knowledge and awareness of Hypertension (Questionnaire A). A knowledge score was calculated from the correct responses to the questionnaire. Another Questionnaire B was regarding doctors counseling to patients for what kind of information doctor gives to the patient when the patient is diagnosed as hypertensive and is put on antihypertensive therapy.(Answers of Questionnaire B were obtained by patients only) Results: A total of 962 hypertensive patients were studied. Though 506 patients (52.60%) had good knowledge score, almost one-third patients 327 (33.99%) had average score and only 5 (0.52%) had excellent knowledge score about hypertension. Regarding the source of knowledge of hypertension, 423 (36.37% of patients got information from Friends/relatives as compared to 183(15.74%) patients who got the information from doctors. Regarding information provided by doctors to the patients, the maximum information provided was pertaining to malaise 303 patients as an adverse effect and Regular BP check-up 339 as non-pharmacological treatment. When patients were questioned that they were informed by doctors regarding possibility of drug interaction arises with simultaneous administration of multiple drugs; only 303 patients were informed regarding drug interactions with drugs for pain. Conclusions: Doctor should give information regarding medicines, drug interactions and when to revisit, apart from routine visit; to avoid complications of hypertension.
