ABSTRACT
The present study extracted and characterized the alginate from brown algae collected from the shores of Mandapam region, Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India. Variations in yield and viscosity were observed in pre-treated material. The extraction for 5 hr exhibited high yield of alginate. The alginate extracted for 1 hr and 5 hr from Turbinaria decurrens was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.
Keywords: Seaweeds, alginate yield, viscosity, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Spectroscopy.
