Abstract

ANXIOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF DIFFERENT HERBAL COMBINATIONS IN ALLOXAN-INDUCED DIABETIC MODEL

Sadia Saleem Rao* and Rahila Najam

ABSTRACT

An increased prevalence of anxiety disorders have been reported in diabetic patients. Therefore, this study was designed to explore the anxiolytic profile of three different herbal combinations that are traditionally used for diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted in alloxan-induced diabetic animal model. The tests used in this study included cage crossing test, open field test and light and dark test. Two herbal drug combinations were selected from the local markets of Pakistan (dosage form) and one herbal drug combination was selected from the international markets of Malaysia (dosage form). Dose of herbal combinations was administered for six weeks according to the drug information provided with the products. Results revealed that all the three herbal drug combinations possess significant anxiolytic activity in alloxan-induced diabetic model. These findings could be considered as a positive lead in using these herbal drug combinations for their anxiolytic activity in patients with diabetes mellitus in addition to their anti-diabetic use. Moreover, these herbal drug combinations may therefore provide an opportunity to use a single dosage form for anti-diabetic and anxiolytic effect.

Keywords: Alloxan, anxiety, diabetes mellitus, herbal.
