Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIFUNGAL POTENCY OF MORINA LONGIFOLIA, VALERIANA HARDWICKII AND VIOLA PATRINII

Yousuf Sajad*, Yousuf Tahira and R. K. Bachheti

ABSTRACT

The antifungal activities of hexane, petroleum ether, acetone, choloroform, ethanolic and water extracts of whole plant (1mg/ml) of Morina longifolia, Valeriana hardwickii and Viola patrinii were determined against wide variety of pathogenic fungi. The extracts were tested against various fungi like Aspergillus niger, Saccharomyces cerevisae and Candida albicans by well diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum lethal concentration (MLC) values of each extract were determined. It is concluded that the acetone extract of Morina longifolia was very effective against Candida albicans followed by ethanolic and water extracts. The ethanolic and chloroform extracts of Valeriana hardwickii exhibited significant antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. The acetone extract of Viola patrinii had greater antifungal potential followed by ethanolic and chloroform extracts of Viola patrinii. These findings established the potential of the plant Morina longifolia, Valeriana hardwickii and Viola patrinii as an effective antifungal agent. However, further studies are needed to evaluate active compounds and probable medicinal benefits in chemotherapy among humans.

Keywords: Morina longifolia, Valeriana hardwickii, Viola patrinii, MIC, MLC.
