Abstract

Dr. Talekar Manisha*, Dr. Mandal Sisir Kumar, Dr. Deshmukh Prashant Nareshrao

ABSTRACT

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a very rare skin disorder where a person is highly sensitive to sunlight (Photosensitive), has premature skin aging and is prone to developing skin cancers. This is caused by a cellular hypersensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light as a result of a defect in the DNA repair system. There is no specific treatment for XP. A case report of 27-year-old male, presented with irregular hypo-pigmented patches and hyper-pigmented patches (freckle-like pigmentation) all over the body including face has been presented in this article. In Ayurveda, it comes under Shvitra (skin disease) having Pitta Kapha dominance with slight vitiation of Vata also. He was under medication from December 2014 to June 2015. Contrary to the available modern medical treatment / management regimen; Ayurveda propounds a systematic / holistic approach in the treatment of XP. A patient of XP was treated with such treatment protocol, is presented as a case study in this article.

Keywords: ayurveda; melanin, psoralin; xeroderma pigmentosum.
