Abstract

ZEBRAFISH AS A MODEL TO STUDY CARDIAC HYPERTROPHY; AND ADVANTAGEOUS OF METHANOL EXTRACTS OF LANTANA CAMARA IN PREVENTING CARDIAC HYPERTROPHY

ABSTRACT

Zebrafish is a better model to study human cardiac hypertrophy than rodents because the physiology of the zebrafish heart has been suggested to resemble that of the human heart in many aspects. Hypertrophy is the increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells. We established a zebrafish embryo model of cardiac hypertrophy by using isoproterenol hydrochloride. Induced zebrafish phenotype showed hypertrophy with increased size near heart region. They were treated with Lantana camara plant methanol extract. The GC-MS analysis of L. camara detects 21 different compounds whereas cis-9-Octadecenal (19.8%), Squalene (19%), Hexadecanoic acid (17%) are in high concentration. The heart rate measured by direct visual counting of ventricle beating. Protein content in the embryos was estimated by Lowry’s method and assay of antioxidants were analyzed. This study suggests that Lantana camara extracts exhibit great potential for antioxidant activity and prevents cardiac hypertrophy induced by isoproterenol
