ABSTRACT
Pandanus fascicularis Lam (Pandanaceae), widely growing perennial climber, has been used in traditional medicine for treating many aliments. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Pandanus fasicularis Lam leaves on Ethanol induced gastric ulcer. Animals were divided in to five groups. Group I treated as Normal control. Group II treated as disease control (1ml Ethanol).Group III treated as standard control, (80mg Ranitidine/ Kg.bw), Group IV and Group V treated as (aqueous leaf extract of Pandanus fascicularis (Lam.), (100mg and 200 mg respectively). Preliminary phytochemical screening of the plant extract of Pandanus fasicularis Lam. revealed the presence of steroids, saponin, sterol,
alkaloids, quinone, phenol, coumarin and glycosides. The Extract at dose 100mg/kg b.w and 200mg/kg b.w. significantly (P<0.05) showed an antiulcer effect. The plant extract showed increased amount of total protein (TP), Glutathione peroxidase (GPX), Reduced glutathione (GSH), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Haemoglobin (Hb), Red blood cell (RBC), White blood cell (WBC) and decreased in the Lipid peroxide (LPO) level, Ulcer index (UI), Ulcer score, Total and Free Acidity levels, ALP, AST activity, compared to the control group. The results revealed that aqueous extract of Pandanus facicularis (Lam.) has anti ulcerogenic potential.
Keywords: Pandanus fascicularis (lam.), Ulcer index, Total acidity, ALT, AST.
