A GLIMPSE ON CONTRIBUTIONS OF ACHARYA SUSHRUTA IN KAUMARBHRITYA

ABSTRACT

Sushruta Samhita is a part of “Brihat trayi”, the three main compositions of ancient Indian medicine i.e. Ayurveda. It is a well known composition among surgeons and considered as a landmark in the field of surgery but contributions of Acharya Sushruta towards other branches of medicine are not known to many. He himself used to emphasize that unless one possesses enough knowledge of relevant branches, one cannot attain efficacy in own subject. Kaumarbhritya is one of the branch in Ashtang Ayurveda which deals with care of the infants, children; their diseases and management. Though Kashyap Samhita is considered as the main text of Kaumarbhritya but it is not available completely. So, the students and physicians have to go through other texts to gain the knowledge and get rid of their queries. The list of contributions of Acharya Sushruta is never ending and in this review, an attempt has been made to highlight the contributions and knowledge of Kaumarbhritya available in Sushruta Samhita.
