ABSTRACT
The pattern of drug use in 650 patients of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit[NICU] at tertiary care hospital, Rajkot, Gujarat was assessed. Majority neonates [85.23%] were in early neonatal period [<7 days] and 60.92% patients admitted in NICU were male. 59.85% admitted neonates were preterm and mean ± SD of weight of all patients being admitted in NICU was 2.16±0.6 Kg. Neonatal sepsis was most common observed reason for admission to NICU. Most frequently used drugs in NICU were Vitamin K and antibiotics among which Amikacin, Cefotaxime, Ampicillin and Gentamicin were commonly prescribed drugs. Antibiotics were changed in 41 patients in which only 15 patients were culture sensitivity [c/s] positive and most
common organisms found were E.coli[34], Klebsiella[14] and Pseudomonas[7]. Out of 650 neonates, 67.85% were discharged, 11.85% died and 20.31% neonates were discharged against medical advice [DAMA]. Most common causes for death were Respiratory distress syndrome [48.6%] followed by Birth asphyxia [25%] and Meconium aspiration syndrome [7.89%]. Antibiotics were of major concern in NICU. The uncertainty regarding the choice of antibiotic can be minimized by periodic survey of etiological agent and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern.
