Abstract

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE OF AEROBIC BACTERIAL ISOLATES OF PROTEUS MIRABILIS FROM SICK LAYER CHICKENS INFECTED WITH SEPTICAEMIA AND SALPINGITIS IN AJMER REGION OF RAJASTHAN

ABSTRACT

Poultry is a rampantly expanding agro-industry in India. Several studies have detected multidrug resistance (MDR) Proteus mirabilis from poultry meat globally; however, no similar data was available for poultry samples in Ajmer region of Rajasthan, India. Infection of Proteus mirabilis was incriminated as the cause of septicaemia and salpingitis. Antibacterial susceptibility of Proteus mirabilis in 12 sick layer chickens in 4 randomly selected farms in Ajmer region of Rajasthan was studied. A total of 24 tissue samples consisting of 12 small intestine and 12 large intestine samples from the birds were cultured and isolates were characterized using standard culture method and biochemical tests respectively. This was followed by antibacterial susceptibility test for the species identified using Bauer- Kirby disc diffusion method. Six Proteus mirabilis isolates were isolated from 3 (25%) of the 12 birds sampled. Antibiograms revealed a high level of resistance to tetracycline (100%). All isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ampicillin, amoxy clav, aztreonam, cefepime, cefezime, cefotaxime, cefopodoxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefazolin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, cefoxitin, gentamicin, imipenem, netilmicin and ofloxacin. All the tested species were sensitive to gentamicin. Multidrug resistance to 2 or more antibacterial agents was observed 0% for the species tested i.e. P. mirabilis, which showed resistance to only one antibiotic i.e. tetracycline. The Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) index of P. mirabilis was found to be 0.12, which is very low.
