Abstract

COMPARATIVE CLINICAL STUDY OF RICINUS COMMUNIS (ERANDA) IN MANAGEMENT OF SANDHIGATAVATA (OSTEOARTHRITIS)

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The disease is essentially one acquired from daily wear and tear of the joints, unlike rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis is most commonly a disease of the elderly. More than 30%of women have some degree of osteoarthritis by age 65. In all classical Ayurvedic text sandhigatavata (osteoarthritis) is describe under the head of vatavyadhi. It is characterised by Sandhi Shoola (Joint pain), sandhi shoth (Joint swelling) vatapurna drutisparsha (feeling of touching air filled bladder), sandhigraha (Restricted movement of joint) and Akunchana prasaranojanya vedana (pain during extension and flexion of joint). In modern medicine treatment begins with weight loss, exercise, analgesic and joint replacement surgery, but out come are sometimes poor and with drawback of side effect. In Ayurved there is vide scope of find out safe remedy for the management of sandhigatavat (osteoarthritis). For clinical study 30 clinically diagnosed patient of sandhigatavata were selected from OPD of kayachikitsa and panchakarma of JAMC, Nagpur. Selected patients were randomly divided into two groups each of 15 patients. Group A was given Erand (Ricinus communis) root powder 2 grams BD for 30 days with lukewarm water and group B was given Erand (Ricinus communis) root powder 2 gram BD alongwith Patra panda sweda with Erandapatra for 30 days. Although satisfactory results obtained on various parameter with Erand root powder but Erand root powder with Patra Pinda Swedan is more significant.
