ABSTRACT

The leaves and fruits of Aegle Marmelos, used in traditional medicine have shown hypoglycemic activity in Alloxan induced diabetic rats. The present study is designed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity of aqueous seed extract of Aegle Marmelos in Alloxan induced diabetic rats in comparison with standard drug Glibenclamide and to test its hypoglycemic activity in control group. 30 albino rats with fasting blood sugar (FBS) in the range of 80-115 mg/dl were induced diabetes with intraperitoneal Alloxan (150mg/kg body wt). After 7 days of induction, the rats that developed a stable hyperglycemia with FBS≥250 mg/dl were selected for the study. Using glucometer, FBS levels were measured on days 0, 3, 7, 14 & 28. Statistically, values in all the groups were analyzed by using one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA), followed by post hoc test for inter group comparisons. Aqueous seed extract of Aegle Marmelos exhibited significant antihyperglycemic activity as compared to control group (p<0.01) and no significant difference in comparison to Glibenclamide.

Keywords: Aegle Marmelos; Alloxan; antihyperglycemic; Glibenclamide.
