ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effect of soyabean supplementation on the lipid profile and blood glucose level of alloxan induced diabetic albino rats. Thirty two male albino rats of average age of 13 weeks were used in the study. The rats were separated into four groups of eight rats each kept into four different standard cages as follows: A – rats fed on rat feed, B-rats fed on rat feed and soyabean meal, C-diabetes-induced rats fed on rat feed, and D-diabetes-induced rats fed on rat feed and soyabean meal. The rats were fed for 28days. At the end of the feeding experiment, the rat were bled, while the blood and sera obtained used for blood glucose level determination and lipid profile assays respectively. The blood glucose was determined using Prestige® Smart System, while serum lipid profile was assayed using standard biochemical methods. Results (Table 2) showed significant decrease (p<0.05) in the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride & low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels of diabetic rats fed on normal feed & soyabean meal when compared to those of the control (group A).However, there was significant increase (p<0.05) in the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride & LDL levels of diabetic rats fed on normal feed only. The results (Table 3) also indicated significant reduction in the blood glucose level of diabetic rats fed on normal feed & soyabean meal (group D) when compared with those of the diabetic rats fed on the normal feed only (group C).Results of this study suggest that soyabean supplementation could assist in protecting diabetics from artherosclerosis and in stabilizing their blood sugar.
