HEPATOPROTECTIVE DRUGS USED IN UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE

ABSTRACT Liver is the main metabolic organ of the body responsible for metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, detoxification of metabolic wastes like urea, ingested drugs and chemicals. Liver damage goes unobserved in the initial stage because no frightening symptoms come up in the early stage of the disease. Conventional system of medicine still has no satisfactory, effective and safe drugs which can treat liver disorder completely. While in Unani system of medicine an ample of hepatoprotective drugs exist which are used clinically for the treatment of various liver diseases. These drugs are safe, effective, time tested and relatively free from adverse effects. In this review some hepatoprotective drugs used in Unani system have been summarized.
