Abstract

CLINICAL EVALUATION OF ASHWAGANDHA CHURNA WITH SARPI AND SHARKARA IN NIDRAHRASA: AN OPEN-LABELLED STUDY ON AYURVEDIC SLEEP RESTORATION

Krupal D. Gamit*, Prof. (Vd.) Mahesh Chand Gupta

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Nidra is one of the three pillars of health in Ayurveda. Disturbances in Nidra manifest as fatigue, irritability, and impaired cognitive function. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (Linn.) Dunal) is traditionally recognized for its adaptogenic and sleep-promoting properties. Acharya Vangsen has mentioned this formulation to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Ashwagandha Churna with Sarpi and Sharkara in patients suffering from Nidrahrasa. Methods: An open-labelled single arm clinical trial was conducted at Government Ayurved College and Hospital, Vadodara. Thirty- six subjects were enrolled, of whom 30 completed the study. All the subjects received 5g Ashwagandha Churna, 5g Ghrita(Sarpi) and 5g Sharkara at Nishi (O.D). Treatment was administered orally for 21 days followed by 1 month of follow-up. . Clinical changes in Shirogaurav, Jrumbha and Angamarda, SleepQuality Scale and WHO Scoring pattern were evaluated using graded symptom scores. Results: Out of 36 registered patients, 30 completed the study. Significant improvement (p ≤ 0.001) was observed in cardinal symptoms and sleep quality parameters. Overall, 3% achieved complete cure, 67% marked improvement, 20% moderate improvement, and 3% mild improvement. Conclusion: Ashwagandha Churna with Sarpi and Sharkara demonstrated significant efficacy in alleviating Nidrahrasa, validating classical Ayurvedic wisdom through modern clinical methodology.

Keywords: Ashwagandha, Nidrahrasa, Sarpi, Sharkara.
