Abstract

PHARMACOGNOSTICAL EVALUTION OF PRIYALA BEEJA (BUCHANANIA LANZAN SPRENG.)

Dr. Kinjal Kalola*, Dr. Bharat Kalsariya, Dr. Dharmendra Jani

ABSTRACT

Background: The present study reveals the pharmacognosy study of seed of Priyala (Buchanania lanzan Spreng.) Aim: To identify and authenticate Priyala Beeja through organoleptic, macroscopic, microscopic, and powder microscopic studies. Materials and Methods: Authenticated Priyala Beeja was procured from the local market of Vadodara and evaluated in the Pharmacognosy Laboratory. Organoleptic characters were assessed using sensory evaluation, macroscopic features were examined visually and measured, while microscopic and powder microscopic characters were studied under a trinocular microscope after appropriate staining. Results: Priyala Beeja was creamish-brown in colour, smooth in touch, sweet in taste, and rectangular to oblong in shape (0.9 × 0.6 cm). Microscopy revealed spiral vessels, oblique vessels, testa, endoderm, cotyledon, and starch grains. Powder microscopy showed characteristic pigment cell layers, starch grains, and abundant oil globules. Conclusion: The observed pharmacognostical characters were consistent with the standard descriptions of Buchanania lanzan Spreng., confirming the identity and authenticity of Priyala Beeja. The findings provide preliminary pharmacognostic parameters that may contribute to the quality assessment and identification of Priyala seed.

Keywords: Priyala Beeja, Buchanania lanzan, Pharmacognosy, Microscopy, Authentication, Powder microscopy.
