MANA PARIBHASHA IN AYURVEDA: REVIEW OF CLASSICAL UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
Rakesh Barwal*, Mehak Bansal, Jaydip Kotiya, Ramakant Vyas, Shraddha N. Dhundi
ABSTRACT Mana Paribhasha (system of measurement) forms the foundation of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics and therapeutics. Accurate measurement is essential for the preparation, standardisation, dosage, and administration of medicines. Classical Ayurvedic texts, particularly those related to Rasashastra evum Bhaishajya Kalpana, describe a comprehensive system of measurement that remains relevant in contemporary Pharmaceutical Practice. A comprehensive review of classical Ayurvedic literature was undertaken to compile and analyse references related to Mana Paribhasha. The study comparatively evaluated the traditional measurement systems, including Magadha Mana & Kalinga Mana, and examined the three principal categories of Mana—Pautava Mana, Druvaya Mana, and Payya Mana—based on the nature of substances. The review revealed that the classical systems of Mana provide a scientifically structured framework for ensuring precision in pharmaceutical preparation and therapeutic dosage. The categorisation of measurements according to the physical nature of substances facilitates accurate drug formulation and administration, thereby supporting the quality, safety, and efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines. Mana Paribhasha represents a fundamental principle of Ayurvedic science and continues to hold significant value in modern Ayurvedic pharmaceutics. A thorough understanding and appropriate application of traditional measurement systems are indispensable for preserving the authenticity, reproducibility, and standardisation of Ayurvedic formulations. Keywords: Mana Paribhasha, Magadha, Kalinga, Pautava, Druvaya, Payya. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
