DECODING THE THERAPEUTIC MECHANISM OF SHASHTIKA SHALI PINDA SWEDA IN MUSCULOSKELETAL, NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS AND SKIN CARE: A LITERARY REVIEW

ABSTRACT Background: Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (SSPS) is a classical Snigdha Sankara Sweda procedure widely employed in Panchakarma practice, particularly for neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Traditionally indicated for Vata-dominant conditions and dhatu-kshaya states, SSPS is also acclaimed for enhancing strength, nourishment, and complexion. Despite its extensive clinical use, there remains a need to explain its therapeutic actions in terms acceptable to modern biomedical science, especially with respect to transdermal absorption, thermotherapy, neuromuscular and skin physiology. Objective: To elucidate the probable therapeutic mechanism of Shashtika shali pinda sweda in musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, and skin care by correlating classical Ayurvedic principles with contemporary scientific concepts of skin permeability, and pharmacologically active phytoconstituents. Materials and Methods: This conceptual and analytical study is based on classical Ayurvedic texts, contemporary pharmacological data, and modern scientific literature related to transdermal drug delivery, skin physiology, thermotherapy, and massage therapy. The pharmacological and nutritional profiles of Shashtika Shali (Oryza sativa), Balamoola (Sida cordifolia), and Goksheera (cow milk) were analyzed and their respective. The procedure of SSPS was examined in relation to Ayurvedic concepts such as Romakoopa, Bhrajaka pitta, Srotoshodhana, and Dhatu-pushá¹i, and correlated with modern mechanisms including stratum corneum penetration, lipid fluidization, vasodilatation, mechano-transduction, and microcirculatory enhancement. Discusion: Analysis reveals that SSPS exerts its effects through a synergistic combination of sustained moist heat, rhythmic massage, hydration-induced enhancement of skin permeability, and application of lipid-rich nutritive media. These factors facilitate improved dermal microcirculation, reduction of inflammation, neuromuscular relaxation, and support of tissue metabolism. Lipophilic bioactive constituents such as phenolic acids, γ-oryzanol, tocopherols, sterols, and alkaloids demonstrate potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, and skin-stabilizing actions. The therapy shows a rational basis for alleviating neurological and musculoskeletal pathology while simultaneously improving skin texture, tone, and lustre. Conclusion: Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda functions as a multimodal, pathology-modifying supportive therapy that bridges Ayurvedic wisdom with modern biomedical science. Its benefits in neurological disorders, musculoskeletal conditions, and complexion enhancement can be scientifically attributed to combined effects of thermotherapy, massage, enhanced transdermal diffusion of lipid-soluble constituents, and improved microcirculation. The study provides a coherent mechanistic justification for the traditional claims of SSPS and supports its continued and expanded application in integrative clinical practice.
