Abstract

HIDDEN HAZARDS OF VITAMIN EXCESS: A REVIEW OF HYPERVITAMONOSIS AND ITS PREVENTION USING DIETARY SUPPLEMENT AND RASAYANA THERAPY

ABSTRACT

People in India often take vitamins and minerals to improve their health but self medicated unregulated use of vitamins and minerals is very common .This is mainly because of polypharmacy. The risk of toxicity increases when consumers ingest active ingredients from multiple products excessive intake of vitamins and minerals can be harmful and over-abusing on supplements can be harmful. The use of these products are mainly to meet generals nutrition requirement for specific purpose like aging, sports, pregnancy, increment in mental and physical performance, increasing energy or reducing weight. A balanced diet rich in natural food sources plays a vital role in maintaining optimal vitamin levels and reducing the risk of hypervitaminosis. Consuming vitamins through dietary sources rather than excessive supplementation helps ensure adequate nutrition while minimizing thepossibility of vitamin toxicity. Acharya charka stated in charka chikitsa sthan Rasayana is a specialized branch of Ayurveda that promotes longevity, enhances immunity, improves physical and mental health, and delays the aging process. It works by nourishing body tissues (Dhatus), improving digestion and metabolism, and strengthening the body's natural defense mechanisms. Common Rasayana herbs include Ashwagandha, Amalaki, Guduchi, Shatavari, and Haritaki etc. When used appropriately under professional guidance, Rasayana therapy helps maintain overall health and prevent disease. A balanced diet rich in natural food sources plays a vital role in maintaining optimal vitamin levels and reducing the risk of hypervitaminosis. Consuming vitamins through dietary sources rather than excessive supplementation helps ensure adequate nutrition while minimizing the possibility of vitamin toxicity.
