Ayurveda is the ancient system of Indian medicine, meaning ‘knowledge of life.’ It has the capability for both the prevention and treatment of diseases. Ayurvedic dosage forms hold a unique place in pharmaceutics and therapeutics. Sneha Kalpana is an important Ayurvedic pharmaceutical process that uses fats as carriers of medicinal properties. Sneha are of four types-1.Ghrita, 2.Taila, 3.Vasa, 4.Majja.[1] Sneha Kalpana includes two major forms: Taila (oil-based) and Ghrita (ghee-based) formulations. From the root word ‘Krup Samarthye’, the word Kalpana is originated. 1Part of the KALKA, 4Parts of GHEE or OIL and 16Parts of the LIQUID are added together boiled and reduced to the quantity of ghee or oil is known as Sneha Kalpana.[2] Taila Murchhana is the first step of taila preparation. This procedure has been introduced to improve the effectiveness of oil and eliminate poor odor and amadosa. Taila kalpana is the pharmaceutical process where the fat and water-soluble active principles are extracted from the basic ingredients into taila.[3] Acharya Sarangadhara described about Sneha Kalpana in detail in Madhyama Khanda .
