A RIVIEW ON STANDARDIZATION OF AYURVEDIC FORMULATION

ABSTRACT Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of medicine and has been used for centuries to promote health, prevent diseases, and restore balance in the human body. In recent years, the demand for Ayurvedic medicines has increased worldwide because of their natural origin and holistic approach to healthcare. However, the growing use of herbal formulations has also raised concerns regarding their quality, safety, consistency, and therapeutic effectiveness. Since medicinal plants are influenced by geographical location, climate, harvesting season, processing methods, storage conditions, and manufacturing practices, maintaining uniform quality has become a major challenge. Therefore, standardization has become an essential requirement for ensuring the reliability and global acceptance of Ayurvedic formulations. This review focuses on the importance of standardization and explains how traditionalAyurvedic principles can be strengthened through modern scientific approaches. It discusses the complete process of quality assurance, beginning with the authentication of raw materials, followed by process standardization, quality evaluation, and testing of finished products. The review also highlights the contribution of regulatory organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Ministry of AYUSH, the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, and Good Manufacturing Practices in establishing quality standards for Ayurvedic medicines. It further discusses the major challenges faced during standardization, including variations in plant materials, lack of quality markers, adulteration, insufficient scientific evidence, and limited research infrastructure. Overall, the review concludes that standardization is the foundation for producing safe, effective, and high quality Ayurvedic formulations. The successful integration of traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern analytical techniques can improve product reliability, strengthen scientific credibility, increase patient confidence, and promote the worldwide recognition of Ayurveda as an evidence-based healthcare system.
