A CONCEPTUAL REVIEW OF THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NIDRA AND JATHARAGNI WITH MODERN SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVE
Asha Patel*, Dr. Dinesh Todkari
ABSTRACT Ayurveda emphasizes the preservation of health and prevention of disease through the proper maintenance of Trayopastambha namely Ahara, Nidra, and Brahmacharya. Just as appropriate Ahara is necessary for nourishment, proper Nidra is equally important for the maintenance and restoration of bodily functions. According to Ayurvedic principles, quantity and quality of Nidra support various bodily functions and play a crucial role in maintaining optimal Jatharagni, which is responsible for digestion, metabolism, and nourishment of the body, whereas disturbed sleep adversely affects digestive functions. In the present era changing lifestyle patterns such as night-shift duties, prolonged study hours, excessive use of electronic devices, psychological stress and irregular daily routines have significantly altered sleep habits. These factors often lead to Ratrijagarana, inappropriate Divasvapna and other forms of Asamyaka Nidra, which may aggravate Doshaand impair Jatharagni. Consequently, various digestive disorders such as Agnimandya, Ajirna, and related gastrointestinal disturbances may develop. The relationship between Nidra and Jatharagni is bidirectional in nature. Samyaka Nidra supports proper digestive and metabolic activities, while a balanced Jatharagni contributes to healthy sleep patterns. This concept is further supported by the modern understanding of the gut-brain axis, which highlights the close interaction between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system. Therefore, maintaining proper Nidra is essential for preserving the normal functioning of Jatharagni and overall health. The present article aims to explore the role of Nidra in maintaining Jatharagni and to understand their interdependent relationship from an Ayurvedic perspective. Keywords: Nidra, Jatharagni, Samyaka Nidra, Ratrijagarana, Divaswapna, Agnimandya, Trayopastambha. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
