BIOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF SIDDHA MONOHERBAL FORMULATION-SADAMANJIL CHOORANAM FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF SWASA KASAM (BRONCHIAL ASTHMA)

ABSTRACT Background: Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by reversible airflow obstruction, bronchial hyper responsiveness, excessive mucus production, and recurrent episodes of wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and dyspnea. Persistent airway inflammation and oxidative stress play a central role in the pathogenesis and progression of asthma. Siddha medicine employs several traditional herbal formulations for the management of respiratory disorders, among which Sadamanjil Chooranam has been widely used for its therapeutic potential. Objective: To qualitatively evaluate the biochemical constituents of Sadamanjil Chooranam and explore their possible relevance in the management of bronchial asthma. Methods: Sadamanjil Chooranam was subjected to qualitative biochemical analysis using standard Siddha biochemical procedures to detect the presence or absence of major inorganic ions and organic constituents. Results: The biochemical analysis demonstrated the presence of unsaturated compounds and amino acids, whereas calcium, sulphate, chloride, carbonate, starch, ferric iron, ferrous iron, phosphate, albumin, tannic acid, reducing sugars, and zinc were not detected. The identified constituents are known to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and tissue-reparative properties, which may contribute to the therapeutic effects of the formulation in bronchial asthma. Conclusion: The findings provide preliminary scientific evidence supporting the traditional use of Sadamanjil Chooranam in the management of bronchial asthma. The presence of bioactive constituents with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities suggests a possible role in mitigating airway inflammation and oxidative stress. Further phytochemical characterization, pharmacological evaluation, and well-designed clinical studies are warranted to validate its efficacy and elucidate its mechanisms of action.
