Abstract

SHATAVARI (ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS WILLD.) IN CLASSICAL AYURVEDIC LITERATURE: A CRITICAL REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Background: Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus Willd.) is a renowned Ayurvedic medicinal plant valued for its Rasayana, Balya, Vrishya, and Stanyajanana properties. Classical texts provide extensive information regarding its nomenclature, pharmacodynamic properties, therapeutic indications, and formulations. Aim: To review the classical Ayurvedic literature on Shatavari and compile information regarding its synonyms, Rasapanchaka, classification, therapeutic indications, and formulations. Materials and Methods: A literary review was conducted using the Brihattrayi, Laghutrayi, 21 Nighantus, and the e-Nighantu portal. Relevant information was systematically collected, compared, and analyzed. Results: Shatavari was described in 21 Nighantus from the 5th to the 19th century AD. A total of 42 synonyms were identified, with Raja Nighantu documenting the highest number (33). Guduchyadi Varga was the most frequently adopted classification. Most texts describe Shatavari as possessing Madhura and Tikta Rasa, Sheeta Veerya, and Vatapittahara properties. Numerous therapeutic indications and formulations demonstrate its wide application in Ayurvedic practice. Conclusion: Classical Ayurvedic literature provides comprehensive information on the identity, pharmacodynamic properties, therapeutic uses, and formulations of Shatavari. This review consolidates scattered classical evidence and serves as a useful reference for future research and evidence-based Ayurvedic practice.
