ASHWAGANDHA (WITHANIA SOMNIFERA): AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW OF CLASSICAL AYURVEDIC LITERATURE AND MODERN PHYTOCHEMISTRY
Dave Priyanshu*, Dr. Dharmendra Jani
ABSTRACT Introduction: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) is one of the most important medicinal plants described in Ayurveda and is widely known for its Balya (strength-promoting), Vrishya (aphrodisiac), Shukrala (spermatogenic), and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. Owing to its rich phytochemical profile, including withanolides and alkaloids, it has gained significant attention for its therapeutic potential in neurological, reproductive, and systemic disorders. Its extensive use in classical Ayurvedic formulations highlights its enduring clinical relevance. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using classical Ayurvedic texts, including major Samhitas and 25 Nighantus, along with modern scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, and AYUSH research portals. Relevant information on pharmacological properties, therapeutic applications, and cultivation aspects was systematically compiled and analyzed. Results: Classical literature consistently describes Ashwagandha as a potent Rasayana drug with applications in conditions such as wasting disorders, neurological diseases, and reproductive debility. Modern studies support its adaptogenic, anxiolytic, neuroprotective, and fertility-enhancing effects, which are primarily attributed to bioactive compounds such as Withaferin A and Withanolide D. Its incorporation in classical formulations further substantiates its broad therapeutic utility. Discussion and Conclusion: Ashwagandha demonstrates a strong correlation between traditional Ayurvedic knowledge and contemporary pharmacological evidence. Its therapeutic efficacy, agricultural adaptability, and growing scientific validation make it a valuable medicinal plant for integrative healthcare. Standardized cultivation, quality-controlled processing, and the use of authentic Ayurvedic formulations are essential to ensure its safety, efficacy, and global acceptance. Keywords: Withania somnifera, Anti-stress, Withanolides, Adaptogen, Rejuvenator. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
